Mare di Toscana_evidenza

12 giugno.

Communication of the tourism in Tuscany. When the thought goes on vacation

June 12th. I open the Italian newspaper Repubblica, that every Wednesday has a section focused on tourism and leisure, and I run into a campaign that has the intent of promoting summer holidays in the Region where I was born some years ago – in a city that overlooks the sea. Full color page in a national newspaper, first output of a planning articulated into several ads. I close the newspaper and I open the door to discouragement. Then I try to look again at the advertising campaign with a different ‘virgin’ approach, as a common reader, trying not to get so involved from the fact that I work in communication. In the end, what do they want to communicate? A common little Mermaid dressed up as she should go to the amusement park, who hands me a starfish. This is perhaps an invitation to try Tuscany’s sea, which – as the unforgettable title says- is “a family experience”.

But how is family involved in this environment?
I have no idea, maybe only those who have created the advertising knows it, undoubtedly the Region’s communication responsible who approved this campaign and who thinks that at the end of this reading path a man will go visit  this location and will make a booking for holidays at Castiglioncello or Isola d’Elba – obviously for all the family-  doesn’t know either. Even avoiding sarcasm, perhaps too common for Tuscans, and trying to analyze more rationally an episode like this, it’s impossible not to reconnect it to all the episodes in which the Italian institutions, while trying to communicate something, often wasted money but not ideas. I only remember the epic episode of the brand (and its related spot) Magic Italy  – insuperable. Why is it so difficult for the Tuscany Region (and many others) to define what to say and to find someone able to communicate in an original, but precise way, and finally analyzing if this communication path could reach a positive response from the customer/citizen ?

This is trivially called “creating a communication strategy”.
In this case there is no strategy and maybe not even a tactic. What motivates to create an advertising like that? Why should people decide to go on vacation in Tuscany? It is impossible not to consider also the executive aspect. Italy is internationally known as the motherland of art, beauty etc.. and Tuscany is the center of this world. Tourist communication should express this beauty, obviously in a modern and not ‘dusty’ way.

According to the analyzed campaign, the beauty of this advertising could be compared to Botticelli’s Venus just as an house in the Tuscan coast  built by a surveyor could be compared to the Baptistery of Florence. At least the spot realized by the Region some year ago had a flowless execution. Too bad that Tuscany wasn’t included in the spot, hiding behind beautiful images, very fashionable, but meaningless. Remember this rule: fashion is used in ugly countries ( have you ever been in New Jersey?) to redeem their images, not in countries which have a plenty of beauty. It looks impossible to find a third way between the banal postcard and the imagination delirium while trying to promote the territory.  With the unquestionable primate of the postcard, which at least has the merit to show us something beautiful, while the analyzed advertising may be appreciated only to some council member who has never seen beauty before. The anonymous out-of-range voice of the Magic Italy spot says : “What you see is your Italy…” . In this case ( and from the point of view of someone born and raised in Livorno) I would add : “And what you see is our money”.
